Barry Sweeny, 66, died at 10:30 a.m. on March 6, 2012, at Central DuPage Hospital in Winfield, Ill., from complications following chemo treatment for leukemia. He was born on June 23, 1945, in Joliet, Ill. Barry graduated from Northern Illinois University with a bachelor of arts degree, majoring in art education. He received a master's degree in sculpture and pursued a Ph.D. in educational administration. He was a man with many interests. He enjoyed traveling with his wife and reveling in the beauty of our country. He loved his family deeply and loved to spend time with his mother, children and grandchildren. His interests included painting, building model train sets, genealogy and stamp collecting. He was an award-winning classroom teacher for 22 years and particularly loved teaching art and science at Franklin Middle School, Wheaton. He gained great satisfaction from helping new teachers through his consulting/mentoring business and authored eight books on teacher mentoring. He was well known as a director of the International Mentoring Association for four years, served in 2003 - 2004 as the part time IMA executive director and was also awarded IMA Director Emeritus status. He is survived by his beloved family who brought him great joy: Marilyn Sweeny to whom he was married for 44 years; his mother, Agnes Sweeny, living in Carol Stream; his son, Matt Sweeny and his daughter, Beckie Sweeny, both from Dodgeville, Wis.; five grandchildren; his brother, Mark Sweeny; and two nephews.
